How Often Should You Really Service Your Hot Tub?
One of the most common questions we get at The Hot Tub Mechanic is: “How often does my hot tub actually need servicing?” The honest answer depends on how much you use it, but there are some general guidelines every hot tub owner in London and Southwestern Ontario should follow.
📅 Weekly: Basic Water Care
This is on you as the owner, and it only takes a few minutes. Test your water chemistry at least once a week using test strips or a liquid kit. You’re checking pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels (chlorine or bromine). Keeping these balanced prevents bacteria growth, protects your equipment from corrosion, and keeps your water crystal clear.
🔄 Every 3–4 Months: Drain and Refill
Hot tub water has a lifespan. Over time, total dissolved solids (TDS) build up and make it harder for chemicals to do their job. Every 3 to 4 months, you should drain the tub completely, clean the shell, and refill with fresh water. This is also a great time to flush the plumbing lines to remove any biofilm buildup — we recommend using a line flush product before draining.
🧹 Every 3–4 Months: Filter Maintenance
Your filter works hard. Rinse it every few weeks with a garden hose, and do a deep chemical soak every time you drain and refill. Most filters last about 12 to 18 months before they need replacing entirely. A worn filter forces your pump to work harder and lets debris circulate through your system.
🔧 Annually: Professional Inspection
Once a year, have a professional look at the mechanical side of things. At The Hot Tub Mechanic, our annual service includes:
- Full electrical panel and wiring inspection
- Pump and motor performance check
- Heater element and sensor testing
- Jet and plumbing integrity check
- Cover and cabinet condition assessment
- Water chemistry calibration
Think of it like an oil change for your car — regular maintenance prevents breakdowns and extends the life of your investment.
❄️ Seasonal: Winterization and Spring Start-Up
If you’re not running your hot tub year-round, proper winterization in the fall and a professional start-up in the spring are essential. Skipping these steps is one of the fastest ways to end up with freeze damage or a seized pump. We handle both and make sure nothing gets missed.
The Bottom Line
A well-maintained hot tub can last 15 to 20 years. A neglected one might give you five. The difference is consistent care and catching small issues before they snowball. If it’s been a while since your last service — or if you’ve never had one — give us a call. We’ll get your spa in top shape.
